Join the Public Consultation Process for Event Sustainability Management

Press release - 14 April 2011

The public consultation process for the international standard for event sustainability, ISO 20121, is open for a three-month period.  BSI, the UK’s national standards body, is leading the consultation process in the UK and interested parties from the events industry, sustainability practitioners and standards experts can register their comments online at: http://drafts.bsigroup.com

The aim of the consultation process for ISO 20121 is to develop an International best practice standard for sustainability in events and establish clear guidance for anyone involved in running events.  ISO 20121 is based on the existing and robust British Standard BS 8901, initially developed for the London 2012 Olympic Games, which has garnered interest from event industry around the globe.

Once the process is finalized, ISO 20121 will be applicable to any organization working within the event industry.  The standard will take a management systems approach requiring identification of key sustainability issues relevant to the user.

The chair of the ISO Technical Committee (ISO/PC 250) developing ISO 20121, Fiona Pelham MD of Sustainable Events Ltd commented: “Everyone is encouraged to engage and share their feedback.  The international working group has delivered an outstanding draft international standard and now is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with the development of sustainability within the event industry.”

Mike Low, Director of Standards at BSI said: “Recognising the good experience users of the British Standard have achieved over the last two years, the development of ISO 20121 - closely modelled on BS 8901 - demonstrates the events industry’s commitment to becoming more sustainable. To ensure the standard becomes relevant at an international level, we are asking event practitioners around the world to review and comment on the draft standard.”
